About This Sacred Artwork

The Visitation of Mary and Saint Elizabeth is shown as a tender meeting at the threshold of a stone dwelling, warmed by golden light and the open hills beyond. Mary, veiled in blue, stands with serene attentiveness as the older Elizabeth receives her with joy, their hands joined in a gesture of welcome and recognition. The scene invites contemplation of the Gospel mystery in which hidden grace is perceived through faith: Christ present in Mary’s womb, John rejoicing before Him, and Elizabeth blessing the Mother of the Lord. Here, charity and humility meet in silence, and ordinary hospitality becomes a revelation of divine nearness.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

The Visitation is the Gospel encounter described in Luke 1:39-56, when Mary, after the Annunciation, goes in haste to visit her relative Elizabeth. At Mary’s greeting, the child in Elizabeth’s womb leaps, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, blesses Mary and the fruit of her womb. Mary’s response is the Magnificat, her great hymn of praise to God’s mercy and faithfulness. In Catholic devotion, the Visitation is honored as the Second Joyful Mystery of the Rosary and is celebrated in the Roman Calendar on May 31. The mystery draws the faithful into Mary’s charity, Elizabeth’s Spirit-filled recognition, and the quiet joy of Christ’s hidden presence.
