About This Sacred Artwork

The Immaculate Heart of Mary is presented with serene tenderness and queenly radiance. Mary stands beneath an intricate golden halo, clothed in a blue mantle over red and ivory garments, her hands drawing attention to the heart aflame at her breast. Roses encircle the heart, while a sword recalls Simeon’s prophecy that sorrow would pierce her soul. Around her, lilies, candlelight, stained glass, and flowing Art Nouveau ornament create the sense of a chapel window glowing with prayer. The image leads the viewer toward Mary’s pure love for God, her maternal compassion, and her faithful union with the saving mission of Christ.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is rooted in Scripture, especially Mary’s pondering heart in the Gospel of Luke and Simeon’s prophecy that a sword would pierce her soul. In Catholic prayer, her heart signifies her sinless love for God, her maternal charity, and her profound sharing in the sufferings of her Son. The devotion grew in close relationship with devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and was notably promoted by Saint John Eudes in the seventeenth century. The Church observes the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the Saturday following the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

For Prayer

Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Immaculate Heart of Mary, gentle Mother of the Church, draw my heart nearer to Jesus. Teach me to ponder the word of God, to love with purity, and to remain faithful in sorrow and joy. Place my family under your maternal care, and lead us always to the mercy of your Son. Amen.
