About This Sacred Artwork

Our Lady Undoer of Knots is depicted with a serene, downward gaze, her hands holding a ribbon that passes from tangled knots into a smooth, open length. Clothed in a deep blue mantle with gold ornament and framed by lilies, roses, candlelight, and stained glass, she stands within a richly patterned Art Nouveau setting. The imagery draws the eye toward Mary’s gentle intercession, a visual meditation on the burdens, confusions, and sorrows entrusted to her maternal care. The loosened ribbon becomes a quiet sign of hope, inviting prayerful confidence in the grace of Christ and the tenderness of His Mother.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady Undoer of Knots is associated with the early eighteenth-century painting Mary Undoer of Knots venerated in St. Peter am Perlach in Augsburg, Germany. Its imagery reflects an ancient Christian theme often linked to St. Irenaeus, who contrasted Eve’s disobedience with Mary’s obedience in God’s saving plan. In this devotion, knots represent the sins, fears, wounds, and difficulties that entangle human life. The faithful ask Mary to intercede with her Son, trusting that grace can untie what seems impossible to resolve. The devotion became especially widespread in recent decades, including through its growth in Argentina, and remains a tender Marian expression of hope and surrender.

For Prayer

Prayer to Our Lady Undoer of Knots

Our Lady Undoer of Knots, gentle Mother of mercy, receive the tangled burdens I place before you. Intercede for me with your Son, Jesus Christ, and help me trust His grace where I cannot see the way forward. Untie what sin, fear, sorrow, or confusion has bound, and lead my heart into peace, obedience, and hope. Amen.
