History & Devotion

The devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary is rooted in the Church’s long love for praying the mysteries of Christ with Mary. The Rosary developed over centuries as a meditative prayer, joining repeated Hail Marys with contemplation of the Incarnation, Passion, Resurrection, and glory of the Lord. Dominican preaching helped spread the devotion widely, and the feast now celebrated on October 7 arose in thanksgiving after the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, when Pope Saint Pius V attributed the Christian victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary through the Rosary. Today, Our Lady of the Rosary remains a beloved title of Mary, calling the faithful to steady prayer, trust, and deeper union with her Son.
