History & Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary is rooted in the Church’s long tradition of praying the mysteries of Christ with the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Rosary gathers vocal prayer and meditation, leading the faithful through the Incarnation, Passion, Resurrection, and glory of the Lord. The feast now celebrated on October 7 developed after Pope Saint Pius V instituted a thanksgiving commemoration associated with the Christian victory at Lepanto in 1571. Over time, the title became known as Our Lady of the Rosary, honoring Mary’s maternal intercession and the Rosary’s place in Catholic prayer. October is also widely observed as a month especially dedicated to the Rosary.
