History & Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows contemplates the Blessed Virgin Mary’s profound participation in the suffering of her Son. The Seven Sorrows traditionally recall Simeon’s prophecy, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus, Mary’s meeting with Christ on the way to Calvary, her standing at the Cross, receiving the body of Jesus, and His burial. This devotion grew strongly in the Middle Ages and was especially fostered by the Servite Order, whose spirituality centered on Mary’s compassion at the Passion. The Church celebrates Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15, immediately after the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, keeping Mary’s sorrow close to the mystery of Christ’s redeeming love.

Our Lady of Sorrows, Mother of compassion, draw my heart near to yours at the foot of the Cross. Teach me to remain faithful in suffering, patient in uncertainty, and trusting in the mercy of your Son. Hold before Him my griefs and the griefs of the world, and lead me always to the hope born from His redeeming love. Amen.
