About This Sacred Artwork

Our Lady of Sorrows appears with tear-filled eyes lifted heavenward, her blue mantle and pale veil framed by a radiant golden halo. At her breast shines a flaming heart encircled with roses and pierced by seven swords, the traditional sign of Mary’s sorrows and her maternal union with the Passion of Christ. Candles glow in the shadowed background, giving the scene the stillness of a chapel vigil. The image invites contemplation of a Mother who does not turn away from suffering, but remains faithful, compassionate, and prayerfully present. In her sorrow, the faithful find a quiet school of trust beneath the Cross.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows meditates on the Blessed Virgin Mary’s profound participation in the suffering of her Son. The tradition often recalls seven sorrows: Simeon’s prophecy, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus, Mary meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, her standing at the Cross, receiving His body, and His burial. The devotion was especially fostered by the Servite Order and is closely associated with the Stabat Mater, the medieval hymn contemplating Mary beside the Cross. The Church observes the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15, immediately after the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, placing Mary’s sorrow in the light of Christ’s redeeming Passion.

For Prayer

Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows

Our Lady of Sorrows, Mother faithful beneath the Cross, teach us to remain close to Jesus in suffering and uncertainty. Receive the wounds, fears, and griefs we carry, and lead them gently to your Son. Help us to love with steadfast hearts, to hope when the way is dark, and to trust that no sorrow offered to Christ is ever lost. Amen.
