About This Sacred Artwork

Our Lady of Sorrows is shown in quiet grief, her eyes lowered and tears resting on her face beneath a deep blue mantle. A warm golden halo surrounds her head, while the luminous heart at her breast is pierced by seven swords, the traditional sign of Mary’s Seven Sorrows. The portrait invites contemplation of the Mother who remained faithful beside her Son through suffering, loss, and the Cross. Its subdued expression and radiant gold tones hold sorrow and hope together, drawing the viewer toward compassionate prayer with the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows contemplates the Blessed Virgin Mary’s suffering in union with the life, Passion, and death of Jesus Christ. The image of the sword comes from Simeon’s prophecy in the Gospel of Luke: “and a sword will pierce through your own soul also.” Over time, Catholic devotion came to meditate on seven principal sorrows of Mary, including the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus, and the events of Christ’s Passion and death. The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is observed on September 15, following the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

For Prayer

Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows

Our Lady of Sorrows, Mother of mercy, draw us close to your Son in the hours when suffering feels heavy. Teach us to remain faithful beneath the Cross, to weep with compassion, and to hope in the promise of resurrection. Place our grief within your Immaculate Heart and lead us gently to Jesus. Amen.
