About This Sacred Artwork

Our Lady of Sorrows is shown in quiet grief, her face lowered beneath a deep blue mantle as a tear rests on her cheek. At her breast, Mary holds her sorrowful heart, radiant and wounded by seven swords, the traditional sign of the Seven Sorrows she endured in union with the suffering of Christ. History & Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows contemplates the suffering of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she shared, with perfect maternal love, in the Passion of her Son. The devotion is rooted in Scripture, especially Simeon’s prophecy that a sword would pierce Mary’s soul, and in her faithful presence at the Cross. Catholic tradition meditates on the Seven Sorrows, including the flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple, and the Crucifixion. The Servite tradition helped spread this devotion through prayerful remembrance of Mary’s sorrows. The Church honors Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15, immediately following the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Our Lady of Sorrows, Mother of the Crucified Lord, draw my heart close to Jesus in every trial. Teach me to stand faithfully at the Cross, to trust when love is costly, and to offer my sufferings with humility. May your wounded heart lead me always to the mercy and hope of your Son. Amen.
