About This Sacred Artwork
Our Lady of Sorrows presents the Blessed Virgin Mary in solemn nearness to the Passion of Christ. Wrapped in a deep blue mantle over a white veil and red garment, she gazes heavenward through tears, a delicate halo encircling her head. At her breast, a radiant heart is pierced by seven swords, while her crossed hands hold the sorrow close. Behind her, Jerusalem stretches beneath a turbulent golden sky, and the three crosses of Calvary rise in the distance. The image invites contemplation of Mary’s compassion, not as despair, but as faithful love that remains beside Christ and beside every suffering soul.

History & Devotion
Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows contemplates the Blessed Virgin Mary’s suffering in union with the Passion of her Son. The seven swords recall the Seven Sorrows traditionally remembered by the Church: Simeon’s prophecy, the Flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus in Jerusalem, Mary meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, the Crucifixion, receiving His body from the Cross, and His burial. The Servite Order helped spread this devotion beginning in the thirteenth century, giving the faithful a prayerful way to meditate on Mary’s steadfast compassion. The Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows is celebrated on September 15, immediately after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
