History & Devotion

The devotion to Our Lady of Mercy, also known as the Virgin of Mercy or Madonna della Misericordia, has long portrayed the Blessed Virgin Mary extending her mantle over the faithful as a sign of maternal protection and intercession. The image became especially beloved in medieval Christian art, where Mary’s cloak symbolized refuge for the Church, the poor, families, religious communities, and all who sought her help. The title is also associated with the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, founded in the thirteenth century with a mission of charity toward captives. In Catholic devotion, this image does not replace Christ’s saving mercy, but shows Mary as the Mother who gathers her children and brings their needs before her Son.
