History & Devotion

The devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes is rooted in the apparitions reported by Saint Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 near the grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, France. Bernadette, a poor and humble young girl, encountered a radiant lady who called for prayer and penance and later identified herself with the words associated with the Immaculate Conception. Lourdes became one of the most beloved Marian pilgrimage sites in the world, especially associated with prayer, conversion, and trust in God’s mercy. The Church celebrates Our Lady of Lourdes on February 11, remembering Mary’s maternal care and the invitation to draw nearer to Christ through humility, repentance, and faith.

The Saint’s Story

Saint Bernadette Soubirous was born in Lourdes, France, in 1844 to a poor family familiar with hardship and illness. In 1858, while gathering firewood near the grotto of Massabielle, she received the first of the apparitions that would become central to the Lourdes devotion. Bernadette endured questioning, disbelief, and public attention with remarkable simplicity and honesty. She later entered religious life with the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, seeking hiddenness rather than fame. Her life bears witness to humility, obedience, and steadfast trust in God. Canonized in 1933, Saint Bernadette remains a gentle model of faithfulness to grace received in poverty and simplicity.
