History & Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes is rooted in the apparitions reported by Saint Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 at the Grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, France. The young Bernadette described a beautiful lady clothed in white with a blue sash, holding a rosary. During the apparitions, Mary called for prayer and penance, and identified herself with words connected to the Immaculate Conception. Lourdes soon became a place of pilgrimage, especially for the sick and suffering, where countless faithful have come to pray, receive the sacraments, and entrust their needs to the Lord through Mary’s maternal intercession. The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated on February 11.
