About This Sacred Artwork

Our Lady of Lourdes is shown standing within the rocky grotto, clothed in white with a soft blue mantle and a luminous halo surrounding her serene face. Her hands are joined in prayer, while Saint Bernadette kneels below with uplifted eyes and a rosary held gently between her hands. A clear stream winds through the stones, and white flowers gather near the place of apparition, giving the scene a quiet atmosphere of grace and recollection. The composition invites contemplation of Mary’s maternal nearness and Bernadette’s humble receptivity, drawing the viewer into the stillness of prayer at Lourdes.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes is rooted in the apparitions reported by Saint Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 at the grotto of Massabielle near Lourdes, France. Bernadette, a poor young girl, encountered a radiant Lady who called for prayer and penance. During the apparitions, a spring came forth at the grotto, and Lourdes later became one of the most beloved pilgrimage sites in Catholic life. The Lady’s words, “I am the Immaculate Conception,” were received in harmony with the dogma proclaimed only a few years earlier. The Church celebrates Our Lady of Lourdes on February 11, a day especially associated with prayer for the sick and trust in Mary’s intercession.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Bernadette Soubirous was born into a poor family in Lourdes, France, and was known for her simplicity, humility, and perseverance. In 1858, while gathering firewood near the grotto of Massabielle, she received a series of apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Bernadette endured questioning and skepticism, yet she remained steady in recounting what she had seen and heard. Later, she entered religious life with the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, living quietly and obediently far from public attention. Her holiness was not marked by worldly importance, but by fidelity, suffering offered to God, and a profound trust in Our Lady’s message.
