History & Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady of La Salette is rooted in the reported Marian apparition of September 19, 1846, near the village of La Salette in the French Alps. Two young shepherd children, Maximin Giraud and Mélanie Calvat, described seeing the Blessed Virgin Mary seated and weeping, then speaking with motherly sorrow about sin, prayer, and return to God. The traditional iconography of La Salette often shows Mary in radiant light, wearing a crucifix accompanied by the hammer and pincers, symbols associated with humanity’s response to Christ’s Passion. Her message has long been received as a call to repentance, reverence for the Lord, and renewed trust in the mercy of Christ.
