About This Sacred Artwork

Our Lady of La Salette appears seated upon a stone in a high mountain meadow, her face bowed and her hands raised to her tearful cheeks. Snowcapped peaks, soft clouds, and golden light surround the sorrowful Virgin as two children kneel before her in quiet attention. Her white veil and flowered garments recall the tenderness of Marian beauty, while the crucifix with the hammer and pincers reflects the traditional imagery of La Salette and its call to conversion. The scene holds sorrow and hope together: Mary’s tears are not distant grief, but a motherly summons back to prayer, reverence, and reconciliation with her Son.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady of La Salette is rooted in the reported Marian apparition of September 19, 1846, near the village of La Salette in the French Alps. Two young shepherd children, Maximin Giraud and Mélanie Calvat, described seeing the Blessed Virgin Mary seated and weeping, then speaking with motherly sorrow about sin, prayer, and return to God. The traditional iconography of La Salette often shows Mary in radiant light, wearing a crucifix accompanied by the hammer and pincers, symbols associated with humanity’s response to Christ’s Passion. Her message has long been received as a call to repentance, reverence for the Lord, and renewed trust in the mercy of Christ.

For Prayer

Prayer to Our Lady of La Salette

Our Lady of La Salette, sorrowful Mother, look with compassion upon your children. Teach us to hear your call to conversion, to honor your Son with reverence, and to return to prayer with humble hearts. Lead us away from sin and toward the mercy of Jesus, that our homes and lives may become places of reconciliation, faith, and peace. Amen.
