The title Our Lady of Good Counsel is associated with a venerated Marian image in the Augustinian church at Genazzano, Italy, known since the fifteenth century. The devotion honors Mary as a mother whose counsel always leads souls to her Son. Rather than presenting advice as mere human cleverness, Catholic devotion sees true counsel as wisdom received in humility, prayer, and obedience to God. The tender closeness of Mother and Child in this title has made it especially dear to those seeking discernment, peace, and confidence in difficult decisions. Pope Leo XIII added the invocation “Mother of Good Counsel” to the Litany of Loreto in 1903.
