History & Devotion

The devotion to Our Lady of Fátima is rooted in the Marian apparitions reported in 1917 near Fátima, Portugal, to three shepherd children: Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto. The message of Fátima is closely associated with the Rosary, prayer for sinners, penance, conversion, and peace. Over time, Fátima became one of the most beloved Marian devotions in the Catholic world, drawing the faithful to entrust personal needs and the wounds of the world to the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Church celebrates Our Lady of Fátima on May 13, the date of the first reported apparition.
