About This Sacred Artwork

Mary Queen of Heaven is enthroned beneath radiant light, crowned in gold and clothed in a deep blue mantle patterned with stars. The Christ Child rests upon her lap, raising His hand in blessing, while angels bow in prayer beside the throne. Lilies and roses bloom at the foot of the scene, framing the tenderness of the Madonna and Child within the dignity of a heavenly court. The work invites contemplation of Mary’s queenship not as distance, but as maternal nearness: the Mother of Christ the King seated beside her Son, turning the heart toward His blessing.

Feast Day

August 22, Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary is closely joined to the mystery of the Assumption. The Church celebrates this feast on August 22, one week after the Solemnity of the Assumption, honoring Mary as Queen because she is the Mother of Jesus Christ, King of all creation. Pope Pius XII formally established the feast in 1954, drawing from a long Christian tradition that praised Mary with royal titles in prayer, hymnody, and sacred art. Her queenship is not a worldly power, but a share in her Son’s victory and a sign of her maternal intercession for the Church. Devotion to Mary as Queen leads the faithful more deeply to Christ, from whom all her dignity comes.

For Prayer

Prayer to Mary Queen of Heaven

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Traditional prayer · Salve Regina
