History & Devotion

Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary honors the interior life of the Blessed Virgin: her love for God, her maternal love for Christ and His Church, and her faithful participation in the mysteries of redemption. Its scriptural roots are often associated with Mary pondering the events of Christ’s life in her heart and with Simeon’s prophecy that a sword would pierce her soul. Over time, Catholic devotion contemplated Mary’s heart alongside the Sacred Heart of Jesus, seeing in her a perfect response of faith, purity, sorrow, and charity. The Church observes the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the Saturday following the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
