History & Devotion

Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary honors the interior life of the Blessed Virgin: her perfect love for God, her maternal love for Christ, her purity, and her sorrowful participation in the mystery of redemption. The imagery commonly includes a heart aflame with charity, roses as signs of purity and devotion, and a sword recalling Simeon’s prophecy that Mary’s soul would be pierced. Catholic devotion to Mary’s heart developed alongside devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and was especially fostered in the Church through prayer, consecration, and liturgical remembrance. Today the memorial of the Immaculate Heart is observed on the Saturday after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, joining the love of the Mother closely to the love of her Son.
