History & Devotion

Devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help is rooted in a revered Byzantine-style icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child. In the traditional image, the Child looks toward the instruments of His Passion, while Mary offers Him maternal comfort and presents Him to the faithful. The icon became widely associated with the Redemptorists, who were entrusted in the nineteenth century with making Our Lady of Perpetual Help known throughout the world. Venerated especially at the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome, the devotion has become a beloved expression of Catholic trust in Mary’s constant intercession, especially in moments of fear, need, and spiritual struggle.
