About This Sacred Artwork

History & Devotion

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus honors the merciful love of Christ, especially as revealed through His pierced side and His self-giving sacrifice on the Cross. Its roots are found in Scripture, the Eucharistic life of the Church, and the prayer of saints who contemplated the Heart of the Redeemer. The devotion grew strongly in the Middle Ages and became especially known through Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the seventeenth century. In 1856, Pope Pius IX extended the Feast of the Sacred Heart to the universal Church. The image of the Heart aflame, wounded, crowned with thorns, and marked by the cross remains a beloved sign of Christ’s personal, sacrificial, and unconquerable love.
