About This Sacred Artwork

The young Jesus is shown as the Good Shepherd, seated beneath the sheltering branches of an olive tree and holding a lamb close to His heart. A delicate halo encircles His head, while His white tunic and blue mantle stand out against the warm countryside, distant hills, and small village beyond. The lamb looks upward in trust, resting safely in His arms. This gentle composition draws the viewer into Christ’s tenderness, recalling the Shepherd who knows His sheep, seeks the vulnerable, and gathers them in mercy. It is an invitation to rest in the quiet nearness of His care.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

The Good Shepherd is one of the most beloved images of Christ in Catholic devotion, rooted especially in the words of Jesus in the Gospel of John: “I am the good shepherd.” It also echoes Psalm 23, where the Lord leads, restores, and protects His people. Early Christian art often used the shepherd carrying a sheep as a sign of Christ’s saving mercy and watchful love. In this youthful depiction, the familiar symbol is joined to the hidden years of Jesus, inviting contemplation of His gentleness, humility, and mission from the beginning of His earthly life. The lamb may recall both the souls entrusted to His care and Christ Himself, the Lamb of God.

For Prayer

Prayer to Jesus, the Good Shepherd

Jesus, Good Shepherd, hold me close to Your Sacred Heart. When I am weak, carry me; when I wander, seek me; when I am afraid, speak peace to my soul. Teach me to trust Your voice, to rest in Your mercy, and to follow You with a humble and faithful heart. Amen.
