History & Devotion

The Divine Mercy devotion is closely associated with Saint Faustina Kowalska, a Polish religious sister who recorded a series of spiritual experiences centered on Christ’s mercy. The now-familiar image presents Jesus with one hand raised in blessing and rays flowing from His Heart, accompanied by the words, “Jesus, I Trust in You.” In Catholic devotion, the pale and red rays are traditionally understood in relation to the water and blood that flowed from Christ’s pierced side. Pope Saint John Paul II established Divine Mercy Sunday for the universal Church in 2000, placing this devotion within the Easter celebration of Christ’s victory, forgiveness, and boundless mercy.
