Devotion to Saint Padre Pio is closely tied to his life as a Capuchin friar and priest, his ministry in the confessional, and his profound meditation on the Passion of Christ. Born Francesco Forgione in Pietrelcina, Italy, he became known throughout the Catholic world for his spiritual counsel, long hours of prayer, and the wounds of the stigmata, which he bore for many years. Pilgrims sought him especially for confession, guidance, and encouragement in suffering. The Church honors him as Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, canonized by Pope Saint John Paul II in 2002. His feast is celebrated on September 23, the anniversary of his death.

The Saint’s Story

Saint Padre Pio was born in southern Italy in 1887 and entered the Capuchin Franciscans as a young man, taking the name Pio. Ordained a priest, he spent much of his life at San Giovanni Rotondo, where his days were marked by the Mass, prayer, spiritual direction, and tireless confession. Many came to him burdened by sin, grief, illness, or uncertainty, and he urged them toward trust in God, repentance, and perseverance. His life included great physical and spiritual suffering, yet he continued to point souls to Christ crucified and risen. Padre Pio died in 1968 and remains a beloved intercessor for those seeking courage, healing, and deeper prayer.
