Devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi has long been marked by love for poverty, peace, and all creatures as gifts from God. Founder of the Order of Friars Minor, Francis embraced a life of radical Gospel simplicity in the early thirteenth century. Catholic tradition especially remembers his tenderness toward animals and creation, not as sentiment alone, but as praise directed to the Creator. He is widely invoked as patron of animals and ecology, and many parishes bless animals near his feast day. The stigmata, which Francis received near the end of his life, remains a profound sign of his union with Christ Crucified.

The Saint’s Story

Saint Francis was born in Assisi around 1181 or 1182 into a prosperous merchant family. After a gradual conversion, he renounced wealth and chose a life of poverty, penance, and joyful dependence on God. He heard Christ call him to rebuild the Church, a mission he first understood literally and later lived through renewal of Gospel simplicity. Francis gathered brothers who became the Friars Minor, preached peace, served the poor and sick, and praised God through creation. Near the end of his life, he received the wounds of Christ at La Verna. He died in 1226 and was canonized in 1228.
