The Church has long honored Saints Peter and Paul together as preeminent witnesses to Christ and foundational apostles of the Church in Rome. Their shared solemnity on June 29 reflects an ancient devotion that joins Peter’s pastoral authority with Paul’s missionary proclamation. In sacred art, Peter is often shown with keys, recalling Christ’s words in the Gospel of Matthew, while Paul is shown with a sword, associated with both the word of God and his martyrdom, and with scrolls or books recalling his epistles. Venerated together, they express the unity of the Church’s apostolic faith: the confession of Peter and the evangelical zeal of Paul, both sealed by witness in Rome.

The Saint’s Story

Saint Peter was a fisherman called by Christ to leave his nets and follow Him. Though he knew weakness and denial, he was restored by the risen Lord and entrusted with the care of Christ’s flock. Saint Paul first persecuted Christians, but after his encounter with the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus, he became one of the Church’s great missionaries, preaching the Gospel across the Gentile world and writing letters that continue to nourish Catholic faith. Tradition holds that both apostles gave their final witness in Rome. Their lives show that Christ builds His Church through mercy, courage, repentance, and unwavering love.
