Devotion to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, often called the Little Flower, grew rapidly after the publication of her spiritual autobiography, Story of a Soul. A Carmelite nun in Lisieux, France, she taught what she called the “little way,” a path of holiness marked by humility, trust, and small acts of love offered to God. Roses became closely associated with her intercession and spiritual legacy, making them a beloved symbol in Catholic art and prayer. Canonized in 1925 and later named a Doctor of the Church, Saint Thérèse remains one of the most cherished saints of modern Catholic devotion.

The Saint’s Story

Saint Thérèse was born in Alençon, France, in 1873 and entered the Carmelite monastery in Lisieux as a young woman. Her life was outwardly hidden, shaped by prayer, community, sacrifice, and fidelity in small duties. She desired great holiness, yet came to understand that sanctity was found not in extraordinary achievements, but in loving God with childlike confidence in every moment. Suffering from tuberculosis, she died in 1897 at the age of twenty-four. After her death, her writings revealed the depth of her spiritual wisdom, and her little way became a lasting guide for souls seeking God through humble, ordinary love.
