About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Rose of Lima appears in a quiet garden radiant with roses, her white veil and black mantle recalling the Dominican spirituality that shaped her hidden life of prayer. She holds the Crucifix close to her heart, her upward gaze expressing longing, surrender, and steadfast love for Christ. Around her, warm light falls across flowering walls and a church tower in the distance, placing her sanctity within the ordinary beauty of a lived Catholic world. The roses surrounding her recall both her name and the fragrance of a soul offered to God through humility, penance, and charity. This image invites contemplation of holiness blooming in silence.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Rose of Lima honors one of the most beloved saints of the Americas and the first canonized saint born in the New World. A lay Dominican, she embraced a life marked by prayer, penance, and generous care for the poor and sick. Traditional images often show her with roses, a reference to her name and to the spiritual beauty associated with her witness. The crucifix is central to her devotion, reflecting her deep union with the suffering Christ. Her liturgical memorial is observed on August 23 in the General Roman Calendar, and she is especially venerated in Peru, throughout Latin America, and in the Philippines.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Rose of Lima was born Isabel Flores de Oliva in Lima, Peru, in 1586. From childhood she was known for her prayerful spirit and love for Christ, later becoming a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic. Though she lived mostly hidden from public honor, her home became a place of charity where she helped the poor and cared for the sick. Rose accepted hardship with remarkable courage, uniting her sacrifices to the Passion of Jesus. She died in 1617 and was canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X. Her life reminds the Church that holiness can flourish in humility, service, and persevering love.
