Devotion to Saint Padre Pio grew during his lifetime and spread widely after his death, especially among Catholics who sought prayer, confession, healing, and perseverance in suffering. A Capuchin priest known for his deep reverence at Mass and long hours in the confessional, Padre Pio became closely associated with the mystery of Christ’s Passion through the stigmata he bore for many years. His memorial is celebrated on September 23, the date of his death in 1968.

The Saint’s Story

Saint Padre Pio was born Francesco Forgione in Pietrelcina, Italy, in 1887. Drawn from childhood to prayer and penance, he entered the Capuchin Franciscans and was ordained a priest in 1910. Much of his ministry unfolded at San Giovanni Rotondo, where countless people came to him for confession, counsel, and intercessory prayer. Though he endured physical suffering, misunderstanding, and the burden of the stigmata, he continually directed souls toward Christ, the Eucharist, and the mercy of God. Padre Pio died on September 23, 1968, leaving a witness of persevering faith and priestly charity.
