The Saint’s Story

Saint Padre Pio was born Francesco Forgione in Pietrelcina, Italy, in 1887. Drawn to prayer from childhood, he entered the Capuchin Franciscans and was ordained a priest in 1910. He spent much of his priestly life at San Giovanni Rotondo, where countless people came to him for Confession, counsel, and prayer. In 1918 he received the stigmata, a mysterious sharing in the wounds of Christ that he bore for decades with suffering and humility. Though his life included trials and scrutiny, his witness remained centered on the Mass, the Cross, and trust in God’s mercy. Pope Saint John Paul II canonized him in 2002.
