About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Monica appears in a moment of tender perseverance, her tearful gaze lifted toward the light as she holds a book marked with the Chi-Rho close to her heart. Draped in blue and cream garments, she stands within a garden of white blossoms, with a church rising in the warm distance. The setting evokes the long patience of intercessory prayer, especially the hidden fidelity of a mother who entrusts loved ones to God. Her halo and upward expression draw the viewer beyond sorrow into hope, where tears become a language of trust and waiting becomes an offering of love.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Monica is deeply tied to the Church’s remembrance of persistent prayer within family life. Known above all as the mother of Saint Augustine of Hippo, she has long been invoked by parents praying for children, spouses enduring difficulty, and those who wait upon God with hope. Her witness comes to us especially through Augustine’s Confessions, where her tears, counsel, and faith are remembered with profound gratitude. The Church honors her on August 27, the day before Saint Augustine’s memorial, placing mother and son side by side in liturgical memory as a sign of grace patiently received.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Monica was a Christian woman of North Africa in the fourth century, remembered for her steadfast faith amid family trials. Her son Augustine wandered for years through ambition, restless searching, and spiritual error, while Monica continued to pray, counsel, and hope. She followed him with maternal concern and entrusted him to God’s mercy, even when conversion seemed distant. In time, Augustine encountered Saint Ambrose in Milan and was baptized, later becoming one of the Church’s greatest theologians. Monica died at Ostia in 387, consoled by the grace she had long desired, leaving the Church a lasting witness to patient love and persevering intercession.

For Prayer

Prayer to Saint Monica

Saint Monica, faithful mother and patient intercessor, pray for all who carry loved ones in sorrow and hope. Teach us to persevere without bitterness, to trust God’s timing, and to offer our tears with love. Intercede for families in difficulty, for wandering hearts, and for every soul in need of conversion. Amen.
