About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Monica appears at Ostia with her hands crossed over her heart, her veiled face lifted in quiet hope beneath a luminous halo. Behind her, the sea glows in the gold of evening, with boats, birds, and coastal buildings suggesting the harbor where her earthly journey neared its close. The composition draws together longing and peace: the perseverance of a mother who prayed through many years, and the gratitude of a soul that had seen God’s mercy at work. In her upward gaze, sorrow is not erased, but transfigured into trust. This portrayal invites contemplation of faithful intercession, patient love, and the grace that often arrives after long waiting.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Saint Monica is honored in the Catholic Church as a model of steadfast prayer, maternal love, and perseverance in faith. Much of what is known about her comes through the writings of her son, Saint Augustine, especially his Confessions. Her memory is closely tied to Augustine’s conversion and baptism, after years in which she prayed, wept, counseled, and trusted God for him. Ostia holds a special place in this devotion because Monica and Augustine shared a profound conversation there while preparing to return to Africa, shortly before her death. The Church celebrates her memorial on August 27, the day before Saint Augustine’s feast, placing mother and son together in the rhythm of Catholic remembrance.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Monica was born in North Africa in the fourth century and lived her vocation with remarkable patience and faith. Married to Patricius and mother of Augustine, she endured family trials while remaining devoted to Christ. Augustine’s restless search for truth caused her deep sorrow, yet she never abandoned prayer for him. Her perseverance was answered when Augustine embraced the Catholic faith and was baptized by Saint Ambrose in Milan. Soon afterward, Monica and Augustine paused at Ostia, where they spoke together of eternal life and the joy of God. She died there not long after, remembered by the Church as a mother whose love became intercession.

For Prayer

Prayer to Saint Monica

Saint Monica, faithful mother and patient intercessor, pray for all families who wait in hope. Teach us to love without despair, to pray without ceasing, and to entrust those dear to us to the mercy of God. May our tears become offerings of faith, and may every longing heart rest in the peace of Christ. Amen.
