About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Monica stands at the shore of Ostia with her hands crossed over her heart, her veiled face lifted in prayerful longing. A thin halo surrounds her head, while golden light pours through the clouds above the sea, illuminating boats, waves, and an ancient coastal city in the distance. The scene recalls the final chapter of Monica’s earthly pilgrimage, when she and her son Augustine contemplated the life of heaven shortly before her death. Her serene expression and upward gaze speak of perseverance, maternal intercession, and the peace of a soul that has entrusted every sorrow to God.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Saint Monica is venerated in the Church as a model of persevering prayer, especially in the life of the family. Her name is inseparable from the conversion of her son, Saint Augustine, whose Confessions preserves the memory of her faith, tears, patience, and hope. The scene at Ostia recalls a deeply cherished moment near the end of Monica’s life, when mother and son spoke together of eternal life while waiting to return to Africa. Augustine describes their conversation as a lifting of the heart toward God. Monica died at Ostia shortly afterward, content that the son for whom she had prayed had come to the Catholic faith.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Monica was born in North Africa in the fourth century and lived her vocation with steadfast faith amid many trials. As a wife and mother, she endured sorrow with patience and entrusted her family to God through constant prayer. Her son Augustine wandered for years through ambition, restless searching, and separation from the Christian faith, yet Monica did not cease to plead for him. She followed him, sought counsel, and waited upon the Lord with remarkable endurance. Augustine was eventually baptized by Saint Ambrose in Milan. Before Monica’s death at Ostia in 387, she had witnessed the grace for which she had prayed so long.

For Prayer

Prayer to Saint Monica

Saint Monica, faithful mother and steadfast intercessor, pray for all who carry sorrow for those they love. Teach us to hope without bitterness, to pray without ceasing, and to trust the mercy of God in every hidden struggle. May our families be drawn closer to Christ, and may our tears become offerings of love before the Lord. Amen.
