About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha stands in prayerful stillness amid a radiant forest, her gaze lifted toward the light. A halo surrounds her head, while a crucifix, white lilies, and a rosary draw the eye toward the heart of her devotion to Christ. The woodland path, flowing stream, and small chapel in the distance create a contemplative setting that honors her life of faith within creation. Known as the Lily of the Mohawks, Saint Kateri is remembered for purity of heart, perseverance, and quiet holiness. This artwork invites reflection on a soul formed by suffering, grace, and steadfast love for God.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Kateri Tekakwitha honors a young Algonquin-Mohawk Catholic whose life has become a witness to purity, courage, and fidelity to Christ. Known as the Lily of the Mohawks, she is especially beloved among Catholics in North America and among many Indigenous Catholic communities. Canonized in 2012, she is recognized as the first Native American saint. Her memorial is observed on July 14 in the United States. Devotees often turn to her as an example of holiness lived in hiddenness, simplicity, and deep prayer, and she is also associated with care for creation because of her life shaped within the natural world.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was born in 1656 in what is now New York. Orphaned young after a smallpox epidemic, she endured hardship, illness, and social opposition with remarkable steadiness. Drawn to the Catholic faith, she was baptized as a young woman and took the name Kateri, after Saint Catherine of Siena. Seeking to live her faith more freely, she eventually went to a Christian community near Montreal. There she became known for prayer, charity, penance, and devotion to Jesus. She died in 1680 at about twenty-four years old, leaving a quiet but enduring witness of holiness.
