About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is shown in a peaceful woodland clearing, her head gently bowed as she holds a wooden cross close to her heart. A stream moves through the forest behind her, catching the evening light, while white lilies and small butterflies surround the path at her feet. Her cream garment, braided hair, and still expression give the scene a quiet dignity suited to the saint known as the Lily of the Mohawks. The natural setting recalls a holiness formed in hidden places, where prayer, purity, suffering, and steadfast love for Christ became a luminous witness. This artwork invites the viewer into silence, reverence, and trust.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Kateri Tekakwitha honors a young Indigenous Catholic woman whose life became a witness to purity, perseverance, and love for Christ. Known as the Lily of the Mohawks, she is remembered for her deep prayer, her commitment to chastity, and her courageous faith amid hardship. Her memory has become especially meaningful for Indigenous Catholics and for those who seek to honor creation as a gift from God. Canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012, Saint Kateri stands as a reminder that sanctity can blossom quietly, in every culture and landscape, when a soul is surrendered to the grace of Christ.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Kateri Tekakwitha was born in the seventeenth century among the Mohawk people. Marked by illness in childhood, she grew into a young woman of notable interior strength and reserve. After encountering the Catholic faith, she received Baptism and chose to follow Christ with courage, even when that choice brought misunderstanding and suffering. She later lived among the Christian community at Kahnawake, where her days were shaped by prayer, penance, charity, and devotion to the Eucharist. Kateri died young, yet her hidden holiness continued to bear fruit. The Church venerates her as Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, the Lily of the Mohawks, a gentle intercessor for purity, courage, and faithful love.
