Devotion to Saint Kateri Tekakwitha honors her as the first Native American saint canonized by the Catholic Church. Beloved under the title Lily of the Mohawks, she is associated with purity, steadfast faith, and a deep reverence for God’s creation. Her memorial is celebrated on July 14 in the United States, and she is often invoked as a patroness of Indigenous peoples, ecology, and care for creation. The Saint’s Story

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was born in 1656 in what is now New York, the daughter of a Mohawk father and a Christian Algonquin mother. Orphaned by smallpox as a child, she grew up amid hardship and loss. After receiving Baptism as a young woman, she took the name Catherine, or Kateri, and followed Christ with remarkable devotion despite opposition. She later went to a Catholic mission near Montreal, where she lived a life marked by prayer, charity, and penance. Saint Kateri died in 1680 at the age of twenty-four and was canonized in 2012. Her witness reminds the Church that holiness can blossom quietly, faithfully, and with great courage.
