The Saint’s Story

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was born in 1656 in what is now New York, the daughter of a Mohawk father and a Christian Algonquin mother. Orphaned by smallpox as a child, she endured hardship, loss, and lasting physical effects from the illness. After receiving Baptism as a young woman, she took the name Catherine, or Kateri, and followed Christ with remarkable devotion despite opposition. She later went to a Catholic mission near Montreal, where her life was marked by prayer, charity, and penance. She died in 1680 at the age of twenty-four and was canonized in 2012. Her witness reminds the Church that holiness can blossom quietly and courageously.
