Chosen as the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and foster father of Jesus, Joseph guarded the Holy Family with humility, chastity, courage, and trust. The Church honors him as a model of hidden holiness, especially through his faithful work, fatherly protection, and obedience to God’s will. His lilies traditionally signify purity, while tools of labor recall the dignity of work and the sanctification of ordinary duties. In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared Saint Joseph Patron of the Universal Church, strengthening a devotion already beloved among the faithful.

The Saint’s Story

Saint Joseph appears in the Gospels as a righteous man entrusted with an extraordinary mission. When he learned that Mary had conceived by the Holy Spirit, he received the angel’s message with faith and took her into his home. He protected Mary and the Child Jesus, led them into Egypt when danger threatened, and later returned with them to Nazareth.
