History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Joseph grew from the Church’s contemplation of his unique vocation beside Jesus and Mary. Though the Gospels record no spoken words from him, they reveal his obedience, justice, courage, and loving protection. Honored as the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and earthly father of Jesus, Joseph has long been invoked as patron of the Universal Church, fathers, workers, carpenters, families, and a happy death. The title Guardian of the Redeemer reflects his faithful mission to shelter Christ in His childhood and serve God’s saving plan in humility. His solemnity is celebrated on March 19, with Saint Joseph the Worker honored on May 1.

The Saint’s Story

Saint Joseph was a righteous man chosen by God for a hidden and extraordinary mission. Betrothed to Mary, he received the angel’s message in a dream and took her into his home with trust and obedience. He protected the Child Jesus from danger, led the Holy Family into Egypt, and later returned with them to Nazareth. There, in the ordinary life of labor, prayer, and family, Joseph helped provide for the household entrusted to him. Scripture presents him as silent but steadfast, a man whose holiness is seen in action. His life remains a model of humility, fatherly love, chastity, and faithful surrender to God’s will.
