Devotion to Saint John Paul II grew from his long and visible witness as pope from 1978 to 2005. The Saint’s Story

Saint John Paul II was born Karol Józef Wojtyła in Wadowice, Poland, in 1920. After suffering the loss of his parents and brother, he discerned the priesthood amid the hardship of Nazi occupation. He later became a bishop, cardinal, and in 1978 the first non-Italian pope in centuries. His pontificate carried him across the world as a tireless preacher of Christ, a defender of the vulnerable, and a fatherly presence to the young. After surviving an assassination attempt in 1981, he offered a striking witness of forgiveness. He was canonized by Pope Francis in 2014.
