About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Hubert of Liège is shown at the threshold of conversion, kneeling beneath ancient trees with his hunting dogs beside him. Before him stands a stag, its antlers framing a radiant crucifix that fills the forest clearing with sacred light. The saint’s hand rests over his heart as he looks upward, caught between the familiar world of the hunt and the unexpected summons of God. Moss-covered stones, autumn leaves, a stream, and a distant castle deepen the scene’s sense of pilgrimage. This artwork invites contemplation of the grace that can break into ordinary pursuits and call the soul toward holiness.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Saint Hubert of Liège has long been venerated in the Church as a bishop and as the patron saint of hunters. The famous stag legend, cherished in Catholic devotional art, tells of a decisive encounter during a hunt: Hubert saw a crucifix shining between the antlers of a stag and was moved toward deeper conversion. While details of the legend developed through tradition, its spiritual meaning has endured. It presents the wilderness not as a place apart from God, but as a place where grace may interrupt ambition, habit, and distraction. For Catholic devotion, Saint Hubert’s image speaks especially to reverence for creation, conversion of heart, and the call to place Christ above every earthly pursuit.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Hubert is remembered as a nobleman of the Low Countries whose life was transformed by grace and who later served the Church as a bishop. Tradition associates his conversion with a hunting vision of a stag bearing the crucified Christ between its antlers, a moment that turned his heart toward God. Afterward, Hubert devoted himself more fully to the Christian life and became known for pastoral care and evangelizing work in the regions connected with Maastricht, Liège, and the Ardennes. His story has remained beloved because it shows that holiness can begin in an unexpected interruption. What began in the forest became, by God’s mercy, a life given to Christ and His Church.

For Prayer

Prayer to Saint Hubert

Saint Hubert, faithful servant of Christ, pray for all who enter the fields, forests, and wild places of creation. Help us to seek God with a reverent heart, to use His gifts responsibly, and to recognize His voice when He calls us to conversion. May Christ crucified be first in our desires, our work, and our rest. Amen.
