Devotional Reflection

About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Francis of Assisi is shown in the humble brown habit of his order, his face lowered in gentle contemplation as he holds the crucifix against his heart. Birds move through the luminous sky and rest near his open hand, while a wolf-like creature gazes up from the sunlit earth. A simple church and distant hills unfold beneath a radiant sky, placing the saint within the beauty of creation he loved so deeply. The scene invites reflection on poverty, peace, reverence for God’s creatures, and the Cross at the center of Franciscan joy.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi has long been marked by gratitude for his radical poverty, humility, and joyful praise of God the Creator. The Church remembers him as the founder of the Friars Minor and as a saint whose love for Christ overflowed into tenderness toward the poor, the sick, and the natural world. His association with animals and creation comes from the witness of his life and the enduring Franciscan tradition of seeing every creature as dependent upon God’s goodness. Catholic communities often honor his feast with prayers for peace, care for creation, and blessings of animals, always rooted in praise of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Francis of Assisi was born in Italy in the late twelfth century and first lived amid comfort and worldly ambition. After a profound conversion, he renounced wealth and embraced a life of Gospel poverty, prayer, and service. He heard Christ call him to rebuild the Church, a mission he first understood through humble labor and later lived through preaching repentance, peace, and love of the poor. Francis gathered brothers into the Order of Friars Minor and became one of the Church’s most beloved witnesses to simplicity. Near the end of his life, tradition holds that he received the stigmata, bearing in his body a mystical sharing in the wounds of Christ.

For Prayer

Prayer for the Intercession of Saint Francis

Saint Francis of Assisi, humble servant of Christ, pray for us. Teach us to hold the Cross close, to live simply, and to praise God with grateful hearts. Help us seek peace where there is anger, mercy where there is hardness, and reverence for every creature entrusted to our care. Lead us always to Jesus, poor, crucified, and risen. Amen.
