About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Francis of Assisi stands in quiet wonder before a radiant sunrise, his brown friar’s habit tied with a cord and his halo outlined against the glowing sky. One hand rests over his heart while the other opens gently toward the hills, a gesture of prayerful offering. Below him, a town rises among olive trees, mist, and golden morning light, suggesting the beloved landscape of Assisi. The scene reflects the Franciscan spirit of poverty, praise, and joyful reverence before the Creator. In Francis, humility is not smallness, but freedom, a heart opened wide enough to receive every created thing as a gift from God.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi has long been cherished for its witness to evangelical poverty, peace, penance, and praise. Born in medieval Assisi, Francis became one of the Church’s most beloved saints by embracing radical simplicity and calling all creation to glorify God. Franciscan spirituality often remembers his tenderness toward the poor, his reverence for Christ crucified, and his joyful recognition of creation as a sign of the Creator’s goodness. His feast is observed on October 4, and his memory continues to draw the faithful toward humility, gratitude, and a renewed love for the Gospel lived plainly and wholeheartedly.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Francis of Assisi was born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone into a prosperous merchant family in Assisi. After a period of conversion, he renounced wealth and social ambition, choosing poverty for the love of Christ. He repaired ruined chapels, served the poor and lepers, and gathered companions who became the Friars Minor. Francis preached repentance with gentleness and joy, desiring to follow Jesus with complete simplicity. Near the end of his life, he received the stigmata, a profound sign of union with the suffering Christ. He died in 1226 and remains a luminous witness to humility, peace, and Gospel freedom.

For Prayer

Prayer for Franciscan Humility

Saint Francis of Assisi, teach me to praise God with a humble and grateful heart. Help me to love Christ above all things, to serve the poor with tenderness, and to receive creation as a gift from the Father. May my life become simpler, kinder, and more faithful to the Gospel. Amen.
