About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Francis of Assisi is shown kneeling in his simple brown habit, meeting the gaze of the Wolf of Gubbio with tenderness rather than fear. His hands cradle the animal’s face while villagers stand near the stone gate of the town, watching this moment of unlikely peace unfold. Warm light, olive branches, wildflowers, and the distant Italian hillside give the scene a gentle stillness. Rooted in a beloved Franciscan tradition, the artwork invites contemplation of mercy that disarms violence, humility that restores trust, and the saint’s reverent love for every creature made by God.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

The story of Saint Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio is one of the most cherished episodes in Franciscan tradition, known especially through The Little Flowers of Saint Francis. In the account, a wolf had frightened the people of Gubbio and threatened their safety. Francis went out to meet the animal without violence, addressing it with the language of kinship often associated with his spirituality. The tale ends with a reconciliation between the wolf and the townspeople, who agree to feed the creature while it ceases to harm them. Whether read historically or devotionally, the story has long expressed the Franciscan witness to peace, humility, and the goodness of creation under God’s providence.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Francis of Assisi was born in the late twelfth century and grew up amid the comforts of a prosperous family. After a gradual conversion, he renounced worldly ambition and embraced a life of poverty, prayer, and service to Christ. He gathered companions who became the Friars Minor, preaching repentance, simplicity, and joy in the Gospel. Francis loved the poor, revered the Eucharist, and saw creation as a gift that praised its Creator. Near the end of his life, he received the stigmata, a profound sign of union with the suffering Christ. He died in 1226 and was canonized in 1228.

For Prayer

Prayer for the Gentleness of Saint Francis

Saint Francis of Assisi, gentle servant of Christ, pray for us. Teach us to meet fear with charity, anger with peace, and every creature with reverence for the Creator. May our hearts grow humble before God, merciful toward our neighbors, and attentive to the healing peace of the Gospel. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
