About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary is shown in royal dress, crowned and haloed, with roses gathered tenderly in the folds of her blue mantle. A red gown, white veil, and gold-trimmed cloak frame her gentle face, while a stone archway opens toward a distant castle landscape. The roses recall the beloved tradition of the Miracle of the Roses, in which her secret works of mercy were revealed through a sign of grace. Here, royal dignity is quieted by humility. The saint’s gaze and careful hands invite contemplation of charity not as display, but as a hidden offering made for love of Christ.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary has long centered on her witness to mercy amid wealth and rank. A princess of Hungary and later Landgravine of Thuringia, she is remembered for using her position to serve the poor, the sick, and the vulnerable. The rose imagery belongs to a cherished medieval tradition often called the Miracle of the Roses, in which food or bread she carried for the poor was said to appear as roses when questioned. Whether approached through history or holy legend, the devotion points to the same spiritual truth: charity done in humility bears the fragrance of Christ. Her memorial is celebrated on November 17.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary was born in 1207 into royal life, yet her heart was drawn toward the poor from an early age. Married to Ludwig of Thuringia, she became known for prayer, generosity, and personal care for those in need. After her husband’s death, she embraced an even more austere life of service, founding a hospital and tending the sick with her own hands. Elizabeth died in 1231 while still very young, leaving a witness far greater than earthly rank. Her life teaches that holiness can flower in hidden acts of mercy, especially when love chooses the lowly place.

For Prayer

Prayer to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, noble servant of Christ in the poor, pray for us. Teach us to give without vanity, to notice those who suffer, and to place mercy before comfort. May our hidden works of charity become offerings of love to Jesus, and may our hearts grow generous, humble, and faithful. Amen.
