About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton appears in a garden-like school setting, clothed in black with a bonnet and radiant halo. She holds a book marked with a cross close to her heart while a rosary rests in her hand. Behind her, children walk toward a sunlit chapel, and before her sit books, a crucifix, a slate, and an open lesson book. The scene gathers her vocation into one contemplative moment: faith received, taught, and handed on with maternal courage. Warm light through the trees gives the composition a sense of providence, inviting prayer for students, teachers, families, and all who labor to form hearts in Christ.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton is closely tied to Catholic family life, perseverance in suffering, and the mission of Catholic education. Born in New York in 1774, she entered the Catholic Church after the death of her husband and the trials of widowhood. In Maryland, she founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s and helped establish a model for Catholic schooling in the United States. Her spiritual legacy is not only institutional, but deeply personal: a life of trust, sacrifice, motherhood, teaching, and fidelity to the Eucharistic faith she embraced. She is widely invoked by Catholic schools, teachers, students, widows, and families seeking courage in times of change.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Elizabeth Ann Seton was a wife, mother, widow, convert, foundress, and teacher whose life was shaped by both sorrow and grace. After her husband’s death, she was drawn to the Catholic faith and entered the Church despite misunderstanding and hardship. With her children to care for and her future uncertain, she followed God’s call step by step. In Emmitsburg, Maryland, she formed a religious community and began a school that helped shape Catholic education in America. Her sanctity was not distant from ordinary life. It grew through motherhood, work, grief, prayer, and steadfast love. Canonized in 1975, she is honored as the first native-born citizen of the United States to be declared a saint.
