About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Clare of Assisi is shown in a peaceful cloister garden, clothed in the simple brown habit and veil of her religious life. A delicate halo surrounds her head as she lifts her gaze heavenward, holding a golden monstrance with the Eucharistic host at its center. Around her, stone arches, flowering vines, lilies, roses, and a distant bell tower evoke the prayerful world of Assisi. The scene draws together Clare’s Franciscan poverty and her profound love for Christ present in the Eucharist. Its warmth and stillness invite contemplation of a heart made strong through humility, silence, and adoration.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Clare of Assisi is closely joined to Franciscan spirituality, Eucharistic adoration, poverty, and contemplative prayer. A faithful companion in the movement begun by Saint Francis, Clare embraced a hidden life at San Damiano and became the foundress of the Poor Clares. Sacred art often shows her with a monstrance or ciborium because of a well-known tradition from her convent: when danger threatened the community, Clare turned in prayer to Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament. This Eucharistic association has remained one of her most beloved signs, presenting her not as powerful in worldly terms, but as courageous through humility, trust, and adoring faith.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Clare was born in Assisi at the end of the twelfth century and was drawn deeply to the Gospel poverty preached by Saint Francis. Leaving behind privilege and security, she received the religious habit and began a life of prayer, simplicity, and sisterly charity. At San Damiano she guided a community of women who desired to follow Christ poor and crucified, forming what would become the Poor Clares. Clare’s strength was quiet but firm: she defended her community’s vocation, loved the Eucharistic Lord, and persevered through illness and hardship. Her life remains a luminous witness that contemplative love can shape the Church with hidden power.

For Prayer

Prayer to Saint Clare of Assisi

Saint Clare of Assisi, humble servant of Christ and daughter of the Church, pray for us. Teach us to love the Lord present in the Eucharist, to seek holy poverty of spirit, and to trust God with courage in every trial. May our hearts become quiet before Him, faithful in prayer, and generous in love. Amen.
