About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Benedict of Nursia appears in solemn dignity, clothed in a dark monastic habit and encircled by a quiet halo. He holds the Rule of Saint Benedict close to his heart while raising the familiar medal marked with the Cross, a sign long associated with prayerful trust in Christ’s protection. Around him, the raven with bread and the shattered chalice recall traditional accounts of danger overcome by God’s providence. A monastery rises in the distance beneath golden light, placing the saint within the landscape of prayer, discipline, and holy perseverance. The scene invites contemplation of a life ordered toward God, steady in obedience, and guarded by the Cross.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Devotion to Saint Benedict is deeply rooted in the Benedictine tradition of prayer, work, stability, and conversion of life. His Rule shaped Western monasticism with a balanced path of humility, liturgical prayer, obedience, and charity in community. The Saint Benedict Medal, one of the most recognized Catholic sacramentals associated with a saint, bears the Cross and abbreviated prayers asking God’s help against evil and temptation. Catholics have long turned to Saint Benedict as a spiritual father whose life points to vigilance, peace, and confidence in Christ. His memorial is celebrated in the Roman Calendar on July 11.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Saint Benedict was born in Nursia around the late fifth century and sought God in a time of cultural upheaval. After leaving worldly ambition behind, he lived for a time in solitude near Subiaco, where his reputation for holiness drew disciples. He later founded monasteries, most famously Monte Cassino, and composed the Rule that would guide generations of monks and nuns. The stories preserved about him emphasize discernment, humility, spiritual authority, and steadfast trust in God. His legacy endures not because he pursued influence, but because he ordered daily life toward prayer, obedience, and love of Christ.

For Prayer

Prayer for the Intercession of Saint Benedict

Saint Benedict, faithful servant of Christ and father of monks, pray for us. Teach us to seek God before all things, to resist temptation with the strength of the Cross, and to live with humility, peace, and perseverance. May our homes and hearts be guarded by Christ’s grace, and may our daily work become an offering of love to God. Amen.
