About This Sacred Artwork

Saint Anne is shown seated with the young Blessed Virgin Mary close beside her, both intent on the open book resting in their hands. Anne’s white veil, rose garment, and green mantle surround her calm, affectionate face, while Mary, clothed in white and blue, follows the page with gentle attention. A sunlit window and white lilies brighten the room with quiet purity. This intimate scene honors the hidden holiness of family life, where faith is received through patience, closeness, and love. In the shared silence of mother and child, sacred learning becomes an act of devotion.

Sacred Tradition

History & Devotion

Saint Anne is honored in Catholic tradition as the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and, with Saint Joachim, the grandmother of Jesus. Although she is not named in the canonical Gospels, devotion to Saint Anne has been cherished for centuries in both Eastern and Western Christianity. The Church celebrates Saints Joachim and Anne together on July 26. Images of Anne teaching or reading with the child Mary reflect a beloved devotional theme: the faith of Israel lovingly handed on within a holy family. For many Catholics, Saint Anne remains a gentle intercessor for mothers, grandmothers, families, and all who help form children in the love of God.

A Life of Faith

The Saint’s Story

Tradition remembers Saint Anne as a faithful woman who, with Saint Joachim, received Mary as a gift from God and raised her in reverence for the Lord. Scripture does not give the details of Anne’s life, yet Catholic devotion has long contemplated her quiet place within the mystery of salvation. In her home, the child who would become the Mother of God was cherished, taught, and prepared to hear the word of the Lord with a generous heart. Saint Anne’s story honors the sanctity of ordinary rooms, patient instruction, and the hidden labor of love that helps form souls for God.
