History & Devotion

Catholic devotion to Saint Teresa of Calcutta grew from her public witness of radical charity, Eucharistic faith, and steadfast service to those most forgotten. As founder of the Missionaries of Charity, she became a recognizable sign of Christ’s compassion in the modern world, especially through care for the poor, the sick, and the dying. Her simple white sari with blue borders became closely associated with a life of poverty, prayer, and service. After her death in 1997, her reputation for holiness continued to spread throughout the Church. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2003 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2016. Her memorial is observed on September 5.

The Saint’s Story

Saint Teresa of Calcutta was born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje. As a young woman she entered religious life with the Sisters of Loreto and was sent to India, where she taught in Calcutta. In time, she discerned a call to serve Christ among the poorest of the poor. She founded the Missionaries of Charity, whose sisters cared for the abandoned, the sick, and the dying with tenderness and dignity. Though widely known throughout the world, she remained rooted in prayer, the Eucharist, and obedience to Christ. Her life reminds the faithful that sanctity is not measured by prominence, but by love made visible in humble service.
